entry № 01 · glossary FIELD NOTES · A → W

A field guide to the terms we use.

Flarely uses some words that mean specific things, clinically, statistically, or just inside the app. This page is the canonical source. Linkable from anywhere ("see: FODMAP"), readable on its own.

A
1 term
Aura
Migraine

Sensory disturbance (visual zigzags, tingling, speech changes) that precedes a migraine attack in some people. Flarely lets you log aura type, duration, and onset relative to head pain so you can spot the 'I have a 40-minute window' pattern.

see also: Prodrome, Trigger

B
2 terms
Baseline
Tracking

Your typical, no-flare-day numbers: sleep length, severity floor, food rotation. Flarely uses your first ~14 days of logs to establish a baseline; anomalies are measured against it, not against a generic average.

see also: Calendar Heatmap, Pattern

Bristol Stool Scale
IBS

Seven-type visual scale (1: hard pellets → 7: liquid) used by gastroenterologists to describe stool form. Tap-to-log in Flarely’s IBS profile; correlates against food, stress, and cycle entries.

see also: FODMAP, Doctor Report

C
6 terms
Calendar Heatmap
App feature

Month view where each day is colored by your worst symptom of the day. Empty days stay paper-colored; flare days get warmer. Tap a day to view, edit, or delete the entries behind it.

see also: Severity, Quick Log

Coaching Card
App feature

Short, opt-in suggestion that appears after a log, like "Tried peppermint last flare; it helped. Want a reminder?" Coaching cards are written ahead of time and triggered by your own data, never by a model.

see also: Flarely Guide, Wellness Guide

Combo Detection
Engine

Two-factor pattern analysis. The engine asks: "Does A+B together raise flare odds beyond what A or B does alone?" Surfaces results like garlic + low sleep = 80% (vs 32% for garlic alone).

see also: Confidence, Pattern

Condition Template
Setup

Pre-configured bundle of symptoms, body locations, triggers and check-in fields. Flarely ships templates for IBS, Migraine, and Eczema; you can also build a fully custom condition.

see also: Custom Condition

Confidence
Engine

How sure the pattern engine is about a correlation, based on sample size and consistency. Low confidence (n<5) is shown but flagged; high confidence (n≥10, consistent direction) becomes a top-line insight.

see also: Combo Detection, Pattern

Custom Condition
Setup

User-built condition profile. Define your own symptoms, body locations, severity scale, and trigger categories. The same on-device engine analyses it; you don't lose pattern detection by going off-template.

see also: Condition Template

D
2 terms
Daily Check-in
App feature

20-second sweep of "hidden inputs": sleep length & quality, stress, weather/pressure, exercise, medications, cycle. The variables most diaries skip and the engine needs.

see also: Quick Log

Doctor Report
Export

One-page PDF with severity chart, top triggers, combos and per-condition breakdowns. Built on your phone, shareable via email, AirDrop, messages, or print. Premium feature; free users get a Personal Summary PDF.

see also: Export

E
3 terms
Eczema Profile
Condition

Built-in template for atopic dermatitis and related skin flares. Includes skin-specific body locations, environmental triggers (humidity, dust, wool), and a product/allergen diary.

see also: Trigger

Engine, On-Device
Engine

The local statistics layer that correlates your logs. Runs on your phone only: no cloud round-trip, no API key, no model. "Not AI," as we put it: just classical correlation, frequency, and combination tests over your own data.

see also: Privacy by Design, Pattern

Export
Data

Push your raw data out of Flarely. JSON for everything, CSV for spreadsheets, PDF for doctors. There’s no "sync" because there’s no cloud; export is the way data leaves the app.

see also: Doctor Report, Privacy by Design

F
3 terms
Flare
General

An episode of meaningfully worsened symptoms relative to your baseline. For IBS this might be cramping + Bristol ≥6; for migraine it’s head pain ≥3; for eczema it’s a visible/itch escalation. Flarely lets you set your own threshold per condition.

see also: Baseline, Severity

Flarely Guide
App feature

Mid-flare help. Surfaces "try this" and "skip this" cards based on what’s historically reduced your flares versus made them worse. Personalized, not generic: it only ranks things you’ve actually tried.

see also: Wellness Guide, Coaching Card

FODMAP
IBS

Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides And Polyols. A family of short-chain carbs that ferment in the gut and trigger IBS symptoms in many people. Flarely flags high-FODMAP items inline as you log meals.

see also: IBS Profile, Trigger

H
1 term
HealthKit
Integrations

Apple's on-device health framework. Flarely can read sleep, cycle and workouts from HealthKit (with permission) so you don't have to log them twice. Nothing is written back unless you opt in.

see also: Daily Check-in, Privacy by Design

I
2 terms
IBS Profile
Condition

Built-in template for Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Includes GI symptom list, gut-region body locations, Bristol Stool Scale, and FODMAP-aware food logging.

see also: FODMAP, Bristol Stool Scale

Insight
Engine

A surfaced finding from the pattern engine, like "poor sleep + high stress → flare within 48h," with the count, time window, and confidence shown. Tap any insight to see the underlying logs.

see also: Pattern, Combo Detection

M
1 term
Migraine Profile
Condition

Built-in template for migraine and severe headache. Includes head-region body mapping, aura tracking, known-trigger food database, and weather/barometric-pressure pulling.

see also: Aura, Prodrome

P
3 terms
Pattern
Engine

A repeatable association in your data (a food, a sleep window, a weather drop) that the engine has seen enough of to suggest. Patterns are statistical, not causal; the app says so explicitly.

see also: Insight, Confidence

Privacy by Design
Privacy

The principle that health data never leaves your phone unless you push it out. No accounts, no analytics on health data, no third-party SDKs touching logs, no model training. The whole app is built around this constraint.

see also: Engine, On-Device, Export

Prodrome
Migraine

Early-warning phase before a migraine (yawning, food cravings, mood shifts) sometimes hours or a day before the attack. Logging prodromes makes earlier intervention possible.

see also: Aura

Q
1 term
Quick Log
App feature

The 15-second entry path: severity, mood, energy, a couple of symptom chips, food. Used many times a day. Detailed logging is available when you need it; Quick Log is what you do at a red light.

see also: Daily Check-in

S
1 term
Severity
Tracking

How bad it is, on a 1–5 scale (Flarely's default) or whatever scale you set per condition. Severity is the primary input to flare detection and the y-axis of every chart in the app.

see also: Flare, Baseline

T
1 term
Trigger
General

Anything correlated with a flare: a food, a behavior, a context (e.g. "barometric pressure drop"). Flarely distinguishes single triggers, combo triggers, and "protective patterns" (things linked to fewer flares).

see also: Combo Detection, Pattern

W
2 terms
Wellness Guide
App feature

Your personal safe-vs-caution list per condition, learned from your history. Foods, factors, and behaviors that have correlated with calm days versus flare days, ranked by confidence.

see also: Flarely Guide, Pattern

Window, Trigger
Engine

The time gap between a logged input (a meal, a stressful event) and the flare it might be tied to. IBS uses 0–8h; migraine 0–24h; eczema 0–72h. Tunable per condition.
